Walking Through Grief

Grief is not something you simply get over in a day. It is a process, and there is no set timeline for how long it takes. You have to allow yourself the space to walk through it, feel it, and heal in a healthy way.

Recently, my family experienced the transition of our oldest brother. It was not something we expected this soon, and the loss has been challenging. When someone you love is here one moment and gone the next, it reminds you how important it is not to take time for granted. You never truly know when the last conversation or the last visit will be.

That reality has been heavy on my heart. There were still more conversations we wanted to have, more clarity we wanted to bring, and more time we thought we had. That alone is a reminder to cherish the people in your life and to be intentional about what you say, what you share, and how you show up for them.

One thing I have learned is that grief is not limited to the loss of a loved one through death. People grieve many things. Some grieve a relationship, a friendship, a job, a dream, or a season of life that has ended. Whatever the source of grief may be, the process is real, and it deserves care.

One way to help yourself through grief is to walk through it literally.

Walking has a way of helping both the mind and body. Getting outside, breathing fresh air, and moving your body can bring a sense of peace in the middle of emotional pain. Being surrounded by nature can also help quiet your thoughts. There is something special about feeling the breeze, seeing the trees move, noticing the grass, and remembering the beauty of what God created.

Moments like that can become a reminder that God is present even in grief. He sees every emotion, every question, every tear, and every thought. There is nothing too hard for Him, and He is able to carry us through the hardest places in life.

Sometimes grief feels heavier when you stay inside and sit with your thoughts too long. Reflection is important, but there is also value in getting up and moving. A simple walk can become a moment of release, a moment of prayer, and even a moment of healing. It helps mentally, physically, and spiritually.

During a walk, you might listen to the Bible on audio, reflect on Scripture, pray quietly, or simply meditate on the goodness and faithfulness of God. Even silence can be healing when you allow God to meet you there.

If you are grieving something today, give yourself permission to process it. Do not rush yourself. Do not minimize your feelings. And do not assume that healing has to look the same for everyone. Sometimes one of the best things you can do is take a walk, breathe deeply, talk to God, and allow yourself to move forward one step at a time.

Grief is real, but so is grace. Healing may not happen all at once, but little by little, step by step, God can help you through it.

Closing Reflection

Whatever you may be grieving, know that you do not have to go through it alone. Take care of yourself spiritually, mentally, and physically. Sometimes healing begins with something as simple as taking a walk.

Until next Friday, ask yourself: What have you done today to optimize your health?
